You’re thinking about taking on an SEO service, but you’re wondering how long it will take.
How long does it take to get a good ranking? And what actions will be carried out during this time ?

As a reminder, an SEO service consists of various initial stages

Year 1

Step 1: Choice of keywords

Step 2: The SEO Audit

Step 3: Implementation of optimisations

Step 4: Implementing a netlinking strategy

Step 5: Setting up a tracking system

Duration of each stage :

Stage 1 requires a preliminary meeting to identify the themes of your site and your competitors. From there, we study the interesting expressions for each theme and their variations. You’ll be given monthly search volumes to help you make the right choice.

Time required: 1 to 2 weeks.

Stage 2 is very time-consuming because it involves auditing your website. This results in the drafting of a substantial document, 30 to 50 pages long depending on the number of expressions that will follow us and the technical work to be done on your site.

At the end of this stage, a meeting is held to validate the optimisation proposals (technical and editorial).

Time required: 2 to 3 weeks

Stage 3 consists of implementing what has been agreed together during the SEO audit. La durée dépend de votre capacité à mettre en place les différentes recommandations et de l’ampleur du travail à faire suite à l’audit. It is also at this stage that we set up the analytics objectives so that we can measure your site’s performance.

Typical time taken: 1 to 2 months

Stage 4 takes place throughout the year, and involves monitoring your external communications and advising you on them. Posts on social networks, optimising and broadcasting your videos, seeking partnerships to obtain new back links (external links)

Time required: 1 to 2 days spread over the year

Step 5 is regular monitoring of your positioning and your content. We advise you throughout the year and interact with you to adapt your list of expressions and your content changes.

Time required: several hours each month, depending on the site’s activity.

SEO Year 1 “Getting off to a good start”
“Runners Take Your Mark” by Dru Bloomfield – At Home in Scottsdale is licensed under CC BY 2.0

My site is optimised, I’ve improved my ranking, why should I continue with the SEO service? ?

As you have seen over the past year, gaining positions is a long-term process.
You need to make sure that there are no technical blockages on your site, and then you need to offer your visitors the richest possible content. At least, it must be as rich as that of your competitors on each targeted expression.

Your competitors’ techniques and content evolve from year to year:

On the technical side, new possibilities are opening up, and new recommendations are being pushed by Google, such as the webP image format, which is becoming much more widespread, or the new recommended cache duration for external resources, recently increased to one year.

On the competitor side, new articles are being created and new sites are emerging.

This is why it is essential to monitor the competition via the top site for each expression in your monthly SEO report. But you also need to follow Google’s latest technical recommendations as closely as possible so that you always stay one step ahead.

But what actually happens after year 1?

As you know, SEO is a competition, and just like in sport you have to keep up and push your limits. Transposed to SEO, you need to keep your content up to date, be technically up to date and increase your visibility.

Year n+1, time for an assessment and new opportunities

SEO review

Search for new opportunities (new expressions)

Corresponding editorial support

Technical support (new Google recommendations)

It all starts with an SEO review, where we look back at the implementation of technical and editorial optimisations. This is a new audit that takes into account the latest Google recommendations. We look at the evolution of your traffic and compare, for example, the analytics objectives for n-1, n-2 and n-3.
If necessary, we implement the new recommendations.

Using the competitive analysis and our discussions, we suggest new keyword opportunities.

We monitor your content creation throughout the year to help you produce the most optimised content possible. Copywriting is time-consuming, so it’s essential that you get the highest possible conversion.

When it comes to technical optimisation, we constantly monitor the latest optimisation trends recommended by Google.

Year n+1 “Ongoing efforts to finish in the lead”.
“Runners Den Classic 2011: 5 mile 2nd place” by Dru Bloomfield – At Home in Scottsdale is licensed under CC BY 2.0

Special case: you’re planning to redesign your site this year

Thinking of redesigning your site this year ? Our SEO service can be adapted to suit !
We’ll help you decide on content structure, tree structure, content changes or clean-up.
If you change the technology used to create your site, your URLs will undoubtedly change. A site that changes its URL without taking the necessary precautions can potentially lose all the SEO work it has done over the years, so this is a crucial stage not to be missed when redesigning a site.

Updated on December 11, 2017 (direct link to writing a review)

If you have a business, it is essential to harness the potential offered by customer reviews.

It is particularly important to know how to react properly to criticism or a negative review about your store.

What are the prerequisites for benefiting from reviews ?

Ensure that you have complete and well-maintained listings

There are various sites where users can leave reviews, including the indispensable Google+ Local and Yelp (world-renowned).
Check that all information is correctly entered on each of your listings :
Logo, storefront photo, hours, category, phone number, etc.

Fill in every piece of information that you are asked to provide.
If you are a restaurant, use this space to showcase your most beautiful dishes photographed by a professional.
If you are a retailer, you can include a photo of the interior and exterior of your store.

Create links on your website and in your emails

Never forget that a dissatisfied customer will more easily take the time to leave a negative and vindictive review. Therefore, it is necessary to anticipate this and encourage your satisfied customers to leave a review.
Several solutions are possible: add links on your website, follow up with your customers after delivery (via email), offer a game or contest (“leave your review and win a €50 voucher”), etc.

Respect the rules regarding reviews

https://support.google.com/plus/answer/2622994
For example, avoid self-rating, as it is pointless (the review will not be published) and could be perceived negatively.

Why Care About Reviews ?

Increase your traffic
As you can see below, results with a rating are much more visible than others.

https://www.google.fr/search?q=shop+coiffure+monplaisir

Build a connection with your customers
Responding to customer reviews will show that you care about their feedback, that you are listening.
It is important to pay attention to what is being said about your business, whether it’s good or bad. You should monitor your reviews and respond to them.

Maintain a good reputation
You should not let negative reviews harm your reputation, especially if these reviews are not based on a real experience.
You need to uncover fake reviews by looking into the issues encountered by the disappointed customer.

How to Respond to Different Types of Reviews?

You may come across negative comments, posted by unscrupulous competitors. If you are certain that this is the case, report it.

But take the time to respond anyway, as it damages you. You need to understand what happened, why the customer is disappointed.
If the review is “fake” and indeed comes from a competitor, the deception will not last long.

Writing Tips for Negative Reviews

Identify the writer (Who is he? When did he come? What happened?).

Show that you have recognized them if that’s indeed the case (“Mr. X, I remember you well”).

Thank the customer for their review, for the time they took to post their testimony.

Highlight positive points.

Show that you are attentive to the problem, rephrase the situation, the problem the customer faced in your own words.

Do not be aggressive, even if the customer is acting in bad faith, remember that your response will be read by others. An aggressive response can do more harm than a negative review.

Offer a solution, apologize if you are at fault, and show everything that has been done to solve the problem.

Show that the establishment has improved and that the problem will not happen again.

Above all, do not offer compensation directly online, as this would encourage customers to leave negative reviews.

Writing Tips for Mixed Reviews

Do not apologize, there is no fault.

Remind them of your professionalism, the attention you pay to details.

Don’t be afraid to assert yourself: “I’m sorry this offer didn’t suit you, please know that we have put all our expertise into buying used motorcycles at the best price for 30 years” (It is recommended to end on a positive note).

Writing Tips for Positive Reviews

Deliver a “human” thank you and show them that their review pleases you. That’s all.

Do not respond to a minor critique in their message.

Never ask them to talk about your business to their friends (it’s unprofessional, and they will do it themselves).

How to Create a Direct Link to Write a Review ?

Why make a 301 redirection when switching to HTTPS?

You may know that changing your domain name requires setting up a 301 redirection on your site. It’s like indicating your change of address, similar to what you would do with postal mail when moving to a new home…
With a 301 redirection, you inform search engines about this domain name change, ensuring you don’t lose your rankings.

When your site switches to HTTPS, the issue is the same. Your address changes, so it’s essential to set up a 301 redirection, or else you risk losing your ranking on Google.

What code to add to the htaccess file to force HTTPS and a unique domain name?

Here’s the code to add at the top of your htaccess file to set up the redirection on your site.
This code forces the domain name on lines 1 and 2, then forces HTTPS on lines 4 and 5.

How to display numbers for Google search results?

I’ve been wondering about this for a while, searching for a Firefox plugin or an option in Google settings, but found nothing…
Finally, to display numbers in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages), I created a Bookmarklet that adds a CSS counter to the Google result page.

Here’s the CSS added by the bookmarklet :

But what’s a Bookmarklet ?

It’s a Firefox Bookmark (a favorite) that executes JavaScript.

How to use the Bookmarklet :

Drag this link to your Firefox bookmarks bar: Show numbers on Google
or
Copy the code below into the URL of a new bookmark :

Perform a search on Google

Click on the bookmark you just added… and there you go! You should see this :

This article is based on the presentation by Alban Renard from Cybercité (one of our partners) at the Blend Web Mix 2016.

SEO Performance – The 10 Points That No One Adheres To That Make a Difference.

1. Define Reliable and Measurable Objectives

Consider the different types of queries in the choice of keywords.

Navigational Query :

Leisure search without the intention of buying something immediately.
Example: I’m looking for information on a ski resort, I type “la clusaz”
15-20% of searches

Informational Query :

The person is looking for specific information.
Example. : I’m going to La Clusaz soon, I want to know the weather, I type: “weather la clusaz”
50-60% of searches

Transactional Query :

The user is in the middle of searching for the best price for a defined product, entering a specific query with the intent to purchase.
Example : I’m looking for a studio to rent in this resort, I enter “cheap studio rental la clusaz”
25-30% of searches

Define KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)

Example: contact form, add to cart, registration form, documentation download, etc.

2. Integrate Universal Search Data

The importance of media in SERPs (search engine result page) visibility

There are a number of media that can bring you additional visibility, so make the most of them.
Google News, images, maps, video, etc.

3. Use Google Adwords Data

Searching for your next Christmas present, the importance of SEA

Many people mistakenly think that SEA (Search Engine Advertising) is the opposite of SEO (Search Engine Optimization). In reality, they are very complementary, especially since Google hides the keywords that led the user to your site. These are the famous “not provided” you see in Google Analytics.
Running an Adwords campaign by working with thematic groups allows you to define which expressions are most effective, those that convert the most.

The ultimate KPI is indeed the search ROI, meaning, what budget I put into my positioning and what are the profits related to these searches ?
Note that in 2016, 55% of people could not differentiate between “Paid” and “Natural” results on Google.

4. Avoid Web Designers’ Traps and Trends

Mega menu

Mega menu, not “mega” clear – Source: http://kidsontalks.com/tag/ux-fail/

Whether it’s sliders or mega menus, you have to ask yourself whether they’re really necessary.
Are they indispensable?
Wouldn’t it be better to have thematic navigation rather than navigation providing access to listings that have nothing to do with each other?

Sliders, Carousels

Is the first image of the slider displayed long enough, aren’t there too many slides?

The Importance of Listings

Although it might not always be aesthetically pleasing, having listings remains a necessity for Google.
This allows, for example, the robot to easily access all your product sheets.

5. Avoid Duplication on Your Site

“Thou shalt wage the Clone Wars” Master Yoda – http://fr.starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Soldat_clone

The number of indexed pages must correspond to the number of pages on the site, no more, no less.
Various software can detect content duplication: Xenu, Screaming Frog.

The idea is to spot duplicated titles or to identify 404 pages that return a 200 code, for example.
It also allows identifying categories that are too similar and should be grouped together.

6. Produce Content Regularly

Let’s feed the Panda! (traduction : “Nourrissons le Panda !”) – Source http://www.panpanbamboo.com/panda-eating-bamboo/

It is necessary to produce quality content.
The idea is to showcase your expertise, but the content must be original and meaningful for your target.
A simple description at the top of a listing will often be insufficient, whereas a blog post presenting a new range of products, or new technology related to products sold on the site will have much more impact.

7. Monitor Your Links

“A good link is a solid link that is followed” The Gimp

Today, it’s essential to follow your links.
This allows you to react in case of negative SEO (link from a low-quality site intended to harm you), but also to optimize existing links (anchors / URLs) and to correct any erroneous links.

Various paid tools allow monitoring links https://www.linkody.com, https://ahrefs.com/, Advanced Link Manager, …
It’s also important to consider the very important internal linking.

8. Use Your Internal Search Engine

Source : http://www.gradius-remanufacturing.com/fr/

Thanks to tracking on your search engine, you can get a better idea of what visitors are looking for on your site, which may lead you, for example, to reorganize your menu.
It’s appropriate to use categories and track search parameters.

Analyzing internal searches will likely lead you to add “long tail” keywords to your keyword list.

9. Analyze Robot Crawls

A robot crawl in the middle of a triathlon – Source: http://www.popularmechanics.com

Knowing the frequency and time spent crawling your site will enable you to identify your priority pages.
If you’re optimizing a page, it might be interesting to know if it’s frequently crawled by Google Bot or not at all.

10. Remove What’s Unnecessary

What to do with this useless object ?

Pages with low content can harm your SEO; after ensuring that traffic is null or very low on these pages, they should be deleted.
Also, consider checking the backlinks to these pages.

Rule No. 1.1: You shall offer your neighbor rich content !

It seems obvious, but for the same subject, if your site offers among the richest content, it has a better chance of being shared, visited, and therefore better positioned.
If you just write a paragraph, without visuals, without data, without links to other pages, your content will have little chance of standing out.

Rule No. 1.2: You shall delete or improve content of low interest !

You must hunt down low-quality content. User experience has become an important criterion for Google.
So, if your visitors find themselves on a content-poor page, you’re going to generate dissatisfaction. In addition to driving your customer away, this can also penalize the SEO of your entire site.

Rule No. 2: You shall not duplicate !

The site’s pages must all follow this pattern :
1 page = 1 unique title + 1 unique h1 + 1 unique url + 1 unique description + 1 unique content

By unique, it means “not found elsewhere on your site or on the internet.”
A content writer who takes the time to create their own sentences will always be more favored than a writer who simply copies/pastes content from another site.

Rule No. 3: You shall maintain a logical structure in your content !

The form of your content is important. Use a correct html structure Title 1, Title 2, Title 3, correctly named images and, if possible, captioned.

Your page must contain text, as Google recommends that important texts should not be in image form : https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/114016 (“Do not embed important text in images”).

More information on how to write quality web content

Rule No. 4: You shall take care of your URLs !

The page addresses must be clean, without too many parameters ?page=1&c=tuy and must contain keywords corresponding to the content.
The URL must be unique, meaning there should only be one address that allows viewing the page.
This implies, for starters, having a single domain name.

Rule No. 5: You shall take care of your meta tags !

Among what are called metas, 2 are particularly important, the Title and the Description.
These elements are important because they appear in Google’s results, which will be read by your future customers ! Therefore, it is essential to work on them.

The title and description must be unique, especially avoid duplicating them

Rule No. 6: You shall take care of your link labels !

The link labels pointing to your page must be descriptive !
Overall, all your links must make sense, which naturally excludes all the “click here”, “learn more”, etc. To do it right, think that by reading the link, one must understand the subject of the page that will appear upon clicking.

Rule No. 7: You shall take care of your visuals !

It is essential to illustrate your points with captivating visuals related to your content.
A clear diagram is often more useful than dozens of lines. But care should be taken to optimize your images.

Rule No. 8: You shall offer content readable on all devices !

Since early 2015, Google has been very explicit on the subject. Sites that are not adapted to mobile devices (smartphone, tablet) may see their ranking decrease.

Message sent by Google: “Our systems have tested x pages of your site and discovered that 100% of them contain major mobile usability errors. The errors present on these x pages seriously harm the proper use of your website by mobile users. These pages will not be considered mobile-friendly in Google search, and will be displayed and ranked accordingly for smartphone users.”

If your site is not responsive (test it on http://ami.responsivedesign.is/), you should quickly request a quote for a redesign in RWD (Responsive Web Design).
Moreover, recent responsive design technologies have the advantage of being faster to download.

Rule No. 9: You shall not make your visitors wait !

Everything that can be put in place to accelerate the loading speed of your pages must be implemented.
Quality hosting, clean and optimized coding of your site, browser caching, server caching, resource compression, …

In recent years, Google’s motto has been: improve user experience !
No one likes waiting for a web page to load… This can even lead the visitor to change sites.
So if your competitor offers roughly the same content as you, but displays it faster. It’s likely that Google will position it ahead of you in its results.

More details on : https://developers.google.com/webmasters/mobile-sites/mobile-seo/common-mistakes/slow-mobile-pages?hl=fr

Rule No. 10: You shall facilitate sharing with your neighbor !

To increase the popularity of your content, it’s beneficial to facilitate sharing on social media.

Because if your content is interesting, it will be shared on social media or other external sites.
But you must initiate this sharing, so start by publishing your content on your own official pages (Google+, Twitter, Facebook, …) as soon as they go online.
For this, have sharing buttons implemented if your site lacks them.

Rule No. 11: You shall avoid obsolete technologies !

Regarding Flash technology.

Although Google’s robots (which index web content) can read the text of flash files (provided it is in text format and not image), best practices dictate that your content should be in HTML and not in flash as much as possible (see best practices : https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/72746#5 ).

Current developments tend to move away from flash technology, as it is not interpreted on smartphone and tablet devices (notably iPhone and iPad), which are increasingly used for web browsing.

Rule No. 12: Because you love your neighbor, you will share this article !

A looping redirection problem sometimes occurs when trying to do a 301 redirect from a non-rewritten page to a rewritten page.

Exemple :
I have a page whose URL is www.monsite.ndd/ma_page.php
I want to rewrite it to www.monsite.ndd/une-url-propre-pour-ma-page

So, I write in my .htaccess file :

However, a problem arises : the URL /my_page.php is still accessible. .
I would like that if the user types www.monsite.ndd/ma_page.php they are automatically redirected to : www.monsite.ndd/une-url-propre-pour-ma-page.

But if we write a rule that sends ma_page.php to /une-url-propre-pour-ma-page and we leave the above rule…
Here we are with a beautiful infinite loop : S

Here is a solution :

This code will perform the redirection only once, which is quite handy in our case.
